i remember when the belt was just a shiny thing he'd flash after knocking some poor bastard out, purple punches flying like he was painting the canvas every time the bell rang. those nights in 145 world felt different then, didn’t it? the weight classes were more like suggestions back then, but god if Dusty didn’t make every pound count with that left hand.
Seen it all, lads.

ever felt like you walked into a gym and the air itself smelled of sweat and bleach, then dusty walks in with those hands that just look like they were made to rearrange faces and suddenly the whole room goes quiet? i was sparring a kid back in 2014, lightweight division but hell if those 155 lb limbs weren’t doing the work of grown men, when all of a sudden the door swings open and dusty’s there, decked out in plain grey hoodie and jeans, asking the coach if he can throw one round. coach nearly choked on his gatorade, kid nearly dropped his mouthguard, and dusty? just grinning like a man who already knows where this is going. next thing i know the kid’s gasping on the canvas after a left hand that hit like a pissed-off freight train, and dusty’s helping him up, clapping his shoulder like “you good, son?” while the whole gym just stood there blinking like we’d all seen a ghost—or maybe just the ghost of a better time when fights weren’t measured in ounces and margins, but in raw, purple chaos that left you grinning for weeks. ah well, we’ll see
Been here longer than some have followed.

I still remember the first time I saw Dustin in full flow at a lightweight show in Lafayette—no belts on the line, no grand stage, just two guys going at it like their last meal depended on it. The weight was what the fighters weighed that morning, not some four-week camp where they’d cut down to 135 while we obsessed over weigh-in drama. That night he laid out his opponent with a left hand that didn’t care about inches or grams; it just cared about ending the conversation. Fast-forward to today and I’m not gonna pretend it’s apples to apples. The cage looks like a NASA clean room now—each fighter comes in with a hydration protocol, a PhD-level cut, and a whole entourage that’ll sue you for a stray elbow. Those same purple gloves still fly, don’t get me wrong, but they’ve got a pinky-watchful ref beside them every second, a cage doctor on speed dial, and a global audience that’ll crucify you for one millisecond of “unsportsmanlike” face-touching. Back then the crowd could smell the fear before the first strike; now it’s measured in micro-sweat. I respect the science, but damn if it doesn’t sap the pure chaos a little. Still, when Dusty cracks his mitts and that old grin shows up, you can see the gym rat in him surfacing—same hoodie vibe, same willingness to throw one round just to see what happens. So the soul’s still there, just wearing a slightly fancier belt.

Dusty at some 160 lb barnburner down in Thibodaux where the referee had half a bottle of bourbon in his boot, and Dusty’s opponent pulled a “I only drink coconut water” nonsense after weigh-ins—classic move. So Dusty lets him jab once, then BAM, left hand so purple the ref blinked and said “was that a fist or just your aura?” 🤣🔥 The guy went to sleep mid-sentence about electrolytes. Dusty helped him up, dusted off his jeans, and goes “son, you need to hydrate *less*.” Kid still tweets about it every anniversary—“he KO’d me with science… bad science.” we’ll see
