Back when a spinning elbow KO wasn’t just a highlight reel—it was our Sunday sermon

y’all ever get chills when the lights dim just before a spinning elbow drops? felt that way the night jones walked out at the garden in ‘17—one second you’re jaw on the floor, the next your beer’s halfway to the floor too. old school cardio, no money in the game, just a man moving like he was three steps ahead of physics and the referee. don’t need a playclock when the whole crowd counts down with you.
Been here longer than some have followed.

god i still remember that night not just for the elbow but for the way the whole venue went quiet like someone hit the mute button, then BOOM the crowd just erupts and you can feel the floor shake under you. was stood near the walkway that night, proper close, and when he stepped out with that slow swagger past the cameras you could see every fan's face just light up—like we all knew we were about to witness something that doesn't happen more than once in a lifetime. still gets me like it was yesterday, proper sunday sermon indeed
Seen it all, lads.

Jones’ 2017 Garden walkout still stands in a league all its own, no question—slow motion swagger, the beard trimmed like a war paint stripe, cameras clicking like flashbulbs at a royal entrance. That was an era when UFC cards had three full fights before the main, so the whole night built itself around one man’s procession. The energy didn’t crest, it peaked the second the spotlight touched him and stayed there for five blissful minutes. Fast-forward to today: three belts, three weight classes, cardboard main events that read “title vs contender” on a napkin, and Jon flanked by a production crew bigger than his ego in 2017. The walkout still has style—rehearsed aerial shots, cinematographer filters, merch glows under stage lights—but it lands a beat too late, as if the whole moment’s been edited into a thirty-second promo reel instead of a ninety-minute sermon. It’s not worse; it’s just different. Twenty-seventeen felt like you’d been given a backstage pass to destiny. Now it’s more like front-row seats to the greatest greatest hits compilation we’ll ever hear. I could be wrong, but the old Jones didn’t need a camera drone above his head to feel mythic—he needed silence. And we gave it to him.

remember when the house speakers got cut to a whisper and all you heard was his boots on the plywood at the garden? i was smashed after the kids' christmas party that night, thought i was going to bed early with a kfc leg, but my missus shoved me back into my coat like "get your arse to the car or you'll miss it again" stood third row centre because the missus won a raffle ticket off some lad who couldn't be bothered queuing—pure fluke—but when that elbow started spinning i swear my mate's pint left a crater in the floor. the camera's slow pan couldn't keep up with the elbow; it looked like something djokovic would return with the back of his racket, just effortless. and the beard—that stripe up the middle, like a norseman who'd just pillaged the judges' scores. the ref hadn't even raised his hands and the crowd was already screaming like it was sunday morning hymns, not 10 pm o'clock. still can't watch that finish without feeling twelve years old, sat cross-legged in front of the tv after a day of no school. back then a spinning elbow wasn't a highlight; it was a testament. you either saw it live or you missed it forever.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

Hey, since when do we need a quiet room to turn Jon Jones into a god? I walked into a pub in Newcastle last year—full roar, bands blaring, pints flying—and halfway through the main card some bloke screamed "Jones is walking out!" and suddenly the whole place just... stopped. Not a complete silence, mind you, but like someone hit pause on a YouTube clip full of screaming. Then he came on screen wearing that beard like a Viking on a warpath and the entire crowd held its breath for five seconds. Sure, we were all pie-eyed, but half the lads in there had never seen him live before 2017. That spin-elbow moment? It still hit like lightning—same chills, same goosebumps, same feeling that time just froze. The venue, the crowd, the alcohol haze—none of it mattered. Jones just proves that myth doesn’t care where it lands; it lands when it damn well pleases.
Do the math before you argue.

remember the time i tried to recreate that elbow on my missus during a Sunday roast cos she wouldn’t shut up about the kids? yeah… my daffy-neck survived but the tv remote did not 🤣 but real talk, mate—those night at the garden weren’t just fights, they were religious gatherings. we should’ve all started collecting those tee-shirts as holy relics. hold my pint next time someone says “main events are slow these days” 🍿
Memes are analysis too.
