mind you, back when daniel was running 10k's in the cage before fights to warm up, chasing the rumour that he once submitted a bloke over the weigh-in table at weigh-ins because the man wouldn't stop mouthing off — that’s the jones i signed up for, the unhinged dancer who made fools out of them all and left the judges chewing pencils just trying to keep up.

Man, I was in the pub when Bones walked out to Kanye and I swear to God the walls shook! 🔥 saw that flash KO elbow live and nearly spilled my pint cos it was THAT sudden
Heart with the team, head on pause.

Remember that time in Vegas when he dismantled that poor bloke over three rounds and the ref had to stop it just so the poor bastard could catch his breath? Bones just stood there grinning like a man who’d just found out the coffee was free forever, still bouncing on his toes like it was round one of sparring. Whole crowd lost their minds when the doctor waved it off—some guys in the front row were actually crying into their shrimp cocktails, bless ‘em. You could feel the whole joint exhale at once, like we all finally got the memo that the nightmare version of Daniel is who we came to watch. The ref looked like he’d just witnessed a magic trick and wasn’t sure if he was allowed to clap.

Bittersweet, isn't it? That team—every punch line, every wink mid-strike, every three-round clinic where the ref waved it off just so the other guy could remember what air feels like—that whole unhinged dance we’ll never see again. The current lot still put on shows, sure, but gone’s the feeling that Jones could turn a main event into a street-corner exhibition if he felt like it. They press the accelerator now, press the points, press the control panels on judges’ scorecards, yet something’s missing—the sense that Bones could switch gears five minutes in and leave the ref wondering whether he’s still officiating or just guest-hosting a one-man highlight reel. The new crew’s solid as granite, but that granite’s been sanded down. Still love ‘em to bits, don’t get me wrong. Just wonder aloud which version stole our hearts more.
Context beats a bare stat.

damn right, nick if that elbow didn’t drop through that poor lad’s guard like a piano falling out a tenth-floor window i still feel the pub go silent for that half-second before the roar came roaring back 🎻 like someone just yanked the volume knob off and then cranked it all the way up in one pull. remember wearing that jerkin with the big jones logo on the back and the sleeves rolled up because i’d shrunk it in the wash two weeks earlier? classics. my own little highlight memory is watching him lock that dude up like a dad putting a toddler in a car seat on an ordinary tuesday night—no drama, no showboating, just elbows raining down so precise you could hear the cartilage snap from where i was standing in the upper bowl. the bloke’s face went from "i’m gonna give him a piece of my mind" to "what fresh hell is this" in about thirty seconds flat, and Bones? still bouncing on his toes like he was waiting for the bus after a long shift. whole arena held its breath when the ref stepped in, then erupted when the card showed perfect 30-27 every round—though half of us were too busy laughing at how calm he looked mid-storm to even glance at the scorecards. those eyes though, man… the second he lands that first clean shot the cockiness just flickers out and you’re left staring at the hollow version of a man who knows he’s just tapped into some cosmic cheat code and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. back in the day you’d walk out of the arena still buzzing from the adrenaline, shoulders sore from clapping so hard, already plotting which bar would be open at 11am the next morning so you could relive the whole thing with strangers who’d never seen it live but would nod along like they’d been there because they knew the tape by heart. ah well, we’ll see

Been here longer than some have followed.

Right, picture this: I’m mid-pint at 2am post-UFC 148, trying to explain to my then-girlfriend—who’d never seen live MMA—why Jones was my new religion. She deadpanned “He looks like a stoned ballet dancer who forgot his painkillers.” 🤣 I lost that fight… and the relationship, but damn if she wasn’t right about the ballet bit!
Memes are analysis too.
