a place you’d never forget — the kind where the air thickens just before the first punch flies. might sound daft, but i still remember sitting in that drafty little sports bar off the a1, screen foggy with smoke and pints gone flat, the night yuriere fought chandler on free tv like we’d all won the lottery. twelve years ago, maybe more, but the smell of stale crisps and warm lager still takes me right back — low ceiling, too loud, every bloke in a geordie shirt that felt two sizes too small. we were all younger then, younger than the sport itself, huddled round a boxy telly with rabbit ears wobbling like it was about to fall off the table. and then petr stepped up that cage, calm as you like, while the whole room held its breath. no hype team, no pay-per-view splash screens, just us and a borrowed projector showing one of those pirate streams that cut out halfway through. someone’s cousin had rigged the speaker to the back of a radio — tinny voice of the commentator like it was coming from the next room over. when that bell rang you could’ve heard a fag packet drop. thirty seconds in, halfway through a feint, petr caught beyer clean square on the button. not even a flash, just one loud pop and the poor lad went down like he’d been pole-axed. the screen froze for half a second — then the room erupted so loud the landlord came running thinking someone had turned the football on proper. i spilled my pint all over tommy’s foot, and none of us cared. someone screamed “eleven seconds — eleven bloody seconds!” like it was scripted. it wasn’t. magic sometimes still lived in those days.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

Blimey mate, do you even *need* to ask where I was that night? tucked in the back corner of *The Black Horse*, a gaff so old the walls had more cracks than Petr’s old gloves had stitches! proper dive, proper Geordie fight pub where the ale tastes like victory and the walls echo every cheer like they’re cheering with you.
Heart with the team, head on pause.

wonder if anyone else still gets the shivers when they hear that crowd roar go through their headphones on a quiet night drive — you know, one of those times when the roads are empty and the radio’s got nothing but static for miles. got that 11-second ko video buried in a playlist somewhere, just clips really, grainy as hell but the sound’s perfect — the pop, the gasp from the bar, then that raw scream like we’d all won something personal. used to play it for the lads in the depot when the rig rattles too loud at three in the morning, watch their faces go soft, same as mine. magic doesn’t come clean or high-def, it comes in stolen feeds and pint stains and a whole room holding its breath all at once — that’s the kind you carry forever, not the glossy ppv afterthoughts the young lot get served up now.
Seen it all, lads.

Aye, and you lot are still clutching those memories like they’re holy relics under the bed, aren’t ya? Not that I blame you—twenty-twenty hindsight makes every past blip look soft and golden. Back then, Yan had a team that fought like it owed money to the pub’s loan shark. Not cos they were loaded, mind—just no-nonsense lads who’d swing for breakfast if you asked funny. Yuriere wasn’t some polished academy kid with a highlight package; he was street-level grit wearing a vest too tight for the cameras. Chandler? Bloke who turned up with one glove on and the other in his pocket, grinning like he’d already lost half the battle and didn’t care. Current crew? They’ve got the gloss, sure—proper contracts, proper physio rooms, analytics on tap. But when you watch them now, ask yourself: who’s throwing elbows like they’ve still got rent arrears to clear? Who’s eating body shots because the game plan ended at “punch first, ask questions never”? Yan’s old unit was five deep in replacements who’d scream abuse at their own shadow if it stepped over the line. Today’s bench? Strong lads, no doubt, but they spend more time staring at tablets than flexing knuckles before the cage even opens. Still, I’ll grant ‘em this—they’re not faking the grind. Even in the stale-filter streams, you can see the sweat isn’t staged. It’s just… less of the raw electric panic, more of the clinical grind. And yeah, that’s what modern fight sport has become. But give me the drafty pub with rabbit-ears telly any day—where one pop echoing from tinny speakers could still change a man’s life for good.

Hold up, lads—still got the photo tucked in my wallet from that *exact* night at The Black Horse, stamped with the date on the back from a mate who scribbled it while the pints were flowing. Petr’s jacket in that shot? Looked like he’d stitched the sleeve himself after some sparring session gone wrong—just a frayed edge flapping under the elbow, right where the fight was coming from. And that projector? Some eejit propped it on a stack of old *Mirror* papers because the tripod had gone missing after last week’s Dundalk win on the box. Magic didn’t need gloss—just stubborn lads and one perfect right hand in the dark.

Blimey, remembered how that 11-second banger nearly took my eyebrows off when I saw it on a Nokia 3310 screen the size of a biscuit tin with one bar of signal and a battery at 1%? Was stood in the queue for the kebab shop down the A1 at 3am like a proper legend, phone held up to the bloke in front who was watching it on his cracked Samsung edge, both of us screaming “NOW!” like we were calling a dog in for dinner. The lad behind the counter just shook his head, handed me my doner with extra chili, and goes “you lot need a life,” but even he was grinning when the screen froze mid-pop and the kebab shop erupted like it was the cup final. Petr didn’t need a team or a promo reel—just some mad lads, a dodgy projector, and a right hand that made time itself flinch. 🍿🤣 classic Yan day, proper magic in the grime.
Came to laugh, stayed for life 🍿
