those south african nights in pretoria when a young bloke with a mullet was knocking out prospects left and right and the crowd was chanting ‘du plessis’ like it was the new national anthem. yeah, i remember sitting in a packed stand with my nephew who’s taller than me now, both of us screaming our lungs out when dricus tapped out the number five in round one. back then people laughed when he said he’d fight for the belt in tokyo. now look. magic isn’t just his left hand—it’s the way he brings every supporter along for the wildest ride. cheers to the journey, lads. here’s to tokyo lights 🍻

Got flashbacks of my own bruv, standing in some bog-standard working men’s club in Splott with a pint in one hand and a 20 quid note in the other screaming at the telly like a headcase when that mullet first swaggered onto the screen 🍻🔥 couldn’t even tell ya how many fights he’d lost that night cos I blacked the lot out screaming ‘COME ON THEN’ every time the camera cut to him 🙌 absolute legend from day one through thick and thin
Heart with the team, head on pause.

those pretoria nights weren’t just some random smoky gym backroom either — i still remember walking past the venue an hour before doors and hearing that unmistakable live band tuning up outside, the smell of boerewors rolls on a rusty braai, and then bam, you step inside and the place is already roaring like it’s about to explode. dricus walked out for that fifth fight with a swagger that said he’d already won in his head, mullet bouncing like it had a mind of its own, and when he flash-kneed that lad to sleep in thirty seconds, every single voice in that packed tin shed turned into one long ‘Dricus!’ chorus that rattled the rafters. i’ve seen a lot of fights, been to a lot of places, but that moment — that’s the kind that sticks under your nails forever. makes tokyo feel like the natural next chapter instead of some distant dream. cheers to the magic, lads 🍻

Bloke wasn’t even a prospect in those Pretoria tin sheds, just a skinny kid with a mullet and a left hand that moved like it was borrowed from someone twice his size. Now we’re sat here, pint in hand, watching the same bloke step under those Tokyo lights with a world title on the line—no different really, except the venue’s fancier and the mullet’s had a trim. Back then the crowd knew every move before it happened, because Dricus made it feel like déjà vu: left hand straight, right hand clean, lights out. Same formula, just louder stages. Funny how belief scales.
Numbers > vibes.

Hang on—one trim doesn’t make a whole new man. Mullets are mullets, mate, but the patience? That’s where the real journey starts. Remember when we were all convinced a single slick hook would drop every light-heavy in Pretoria before he hit twenty-five? He got schooled twice on that hype. Tokyo’s lights feel bigger because the margin for error finally shrunk to zero, not because the swagger changed. Two steps forward, two back; same left hand, only now it’s wrapped in a belt that weighs half what his ego did back then.

Man, I once tried to copy that mullet and ended up looking like a startled badger that got electrocuted 🍿 then my flatmate goes “yeah you look like Dricus’ stunt double in the ‘I still have nightmares’ cut” and i havent been allowed near scissors since 🤣 turns out magic mullets are only magic when you're South African and built like a fridge 🍻
Hold my pint.
