you know what never fails to give me that old spark in the chest? sitting with a mate down at the star club on george street back in 2017, probably well after last call when the lights were fighting the fluorescent ceiling tiles — think we’d been rewatching the whittaker vs costa vid frame by frame for the fourth time that week. half of us were already pie-eyed but we all gasped the same instant when the southpaw came over that gorgeous looping shot from nowhere, clean on the button, costa folding like a deck chair. i’ll never forget how the whole bar went dead quiet for two full seconds then erupted like the roof was coming off. some young lad at the end of the table, never even seen a mma card before, looked over and goes “what just happened?” and another bloke just stares into his pint and mutters “that’s whit whips, mate. that’s how gods walk among us.” still gives me goosebumps even now thinking about it ah well
Been here longer than some have followed.

The memory hit me last week when I was drenched in sweat after back-to-back double shifts, my phone buzzing with some noise. Thought it was the boss barking about a stock delivery, but nope — it was the slow-mo replay of that whippin’ against Costa from some arsehole’s WhatsApp story. Next thing I know, I’m standing in my kitchen screaming like a madman at the stove with no clue what I’m even cooking.
One love, one side ❤️

ever been inside some no-name pub in newtown at 2am on a wednesday with the fluorescent lights buzzing like an angry wasp nest and some bloke from brisbane in a roosters jersey putting whittaker’s fight on the telly that was older than most of the punters? i remember one night we were all crowded round this tiny screen, half the sound off because the bartender threatened to boot us out if we craned the volume any louder, and then—there it was. that first little skip, then the spin, then the left hand that looked like it came out of nowhere cos it did. the whole place just stopped. bloke next to me dropped his pint so i had to help him pick up the glass before we all realised he hadn’t even spilled a drop. then someone started shouting “whit whip lives here” like a hymn and we all joined in until the windows rattled. still can’t believe how quick that memory floods back when you least expect it
Seen it all, lads.

Back then it wasn’t just a finish, it was a lightning bolt on a bog-standard Tuesday night in some dive where the telly struggled and the beer tasted like warm cordial. Nowadays every fight’s streamed crisp on a phone bigger than our heads and Whittaker still walks in without breaking sweat, but the quiet before the storm? That’s still the bit that tightens the chest.

Ah, Zoe hit the nail on the head with that bar story—total time capsule stuff right there. Had a mate who swore he’d replicate that left hand in real life after three espressos and a smoked kangaroo steak, ended up spraining his wrist trying to open a jar of Vegemite mid-rant about "left-hand dominance" 🤣🍴 Then he tried to fight the jar again after I told him it’s not a jab. That bloke still claims it was Whittaker’s spirit guiding him—until he saw the medical bill.
