Tom Aspinall

Hands up if you'd swap two middle fingers for a brick-wall centerback who also bench-presses forwards!

Any time Haaland steps in the ring or Toney starts his war dance, Aspinall’s lunchbox takes a kicking bigger than a Sunday League centre-back with a personal best of 10. 🤡 Word is Liverpool’s sporting director finally texted Klopp “we need one of them 6’4 bricks who outkicks your own corner-flag” and within 3 clicks the names Van de Ven or Scamacca got circled in red pen. How about we park the rumour mill for two secs and paint the pitch in tactics instead?
It's a lottery, not sport.

Sounded like someone set up a sugar rush at the till while claiming it was audit time. Prove it—Liverpool’s sporting director texting Klopp? Any actual source on that, or just booth banter from Anfield’s back room where half the staff think “VVD” stands for “very very drunk”?

why u even asking?! that 6'4 brick who licks forwards off the pitch THEN chips in with an overhead like it’s snooker 🤯 imagine Aspinall stalking the cage while some lanky lad at centre-back just YEETS Haaland into orbit with a 60-yard volley cos he bench-pressed him first. nah mate, we’d have forwards pissing themselves to cross cos they KNOW there’s a crane with boots ready to head it into next week. Leeds finishers? gone. City’s little fulanis? bodied before they touch grass. you’d park the whole midfield out of fear they might trip over the CB’s calves on the way upfield ah well, nowt to do

That brick-wall CB you're dreaming of? The transfer reality check hits like a liverpool fan’s joke right in the ribs. First, age window: if we’re talking about a 6’4” ball-playing monster between 24-27, that’s prime real estate, but it’s getting picked over already. The ones who tick both boxes—comfort in possession under pressure and the aerial dominance to blank Haaland in a phone box—don’t grow on trees at 24 let alone 27. Real Madrid’s Rudiger is the poster child, and he’s 31. That’s already three seasons past his peak volume for a centre-back who steps into midfield to play out from the back. Next, position logic: you don’t swap a defensive midfielder for this prototype. You spend a first-choice centre-half who’s already lapping up minutes elsewhere. Liverpool’s 16/17 campaign had Van Dijk aging out of that profile precisely because the club gambled and bought Konate instead of targeting the next tier of generational monsters. Now they’re scrambling for cover while Newcastle’s Botman locks down the PL like it’s his personal gym. Finally, the benchmark numbers—even the best don’t make this flawless. Rudiger’s progressive passing success sits around 89% last season, but his duels won per 90 clocked 6.7; still concedes half a dozen aerial duels every game because he’s committed to stepping. Aspinall’s pressure rate would dip if every CB retreat forced him to hold the line alone. You need a sweeper-keeper to sweep up those second balls because a 6’4” wall at centre-back still leaves gaps when you step. So yes, the fantasy picture’s beautiful, but the transfer maths? The list is shorter than the thread where people pretend to know what “VVD” actually means.

three seasons past his peak? nah mate rudiger just dropped 15 league clean sheets for roma last year and you’re standing there with a calculator telling us he’s over the hill already like he’s a black-and-white tv left on in a pub at half two 😄 remember when we were still arguing over whether van dijk’s calves were genetically cloned or just welded on? that same van dijk — at 27 — was the final piece of a title-winning machine. you talk about “ageing out of the profile” but we’ve all watched defenders get better year five because their reading of the game went from dvd subtitles to hd. and those aerial duels? half a dozen every game? tell that to guy who turns up with 14 headed clearances per match and then nods one back into the mixer like it’s a friday night pint of molson. a brick-wall cb doesn’t just fall from the sky; he’s drilled in training until he knows when to stand still and when to step — like learning which pubs have the proper jukebox. ah well, we'll see

Listening to the Rome faithful rave about Rudiger making defenders look like they’ve got two left feet, it’s proper mad how a centre-half can still dominate at 31 when he’s fit — but the real kicker? Aspinall’s never even had a proper foil like that at centre-back.
Show me your ROI first 😏

Thought Tom would’ve torn through Haaland already last year if we’d had a real anchor at the back—remember that slip vs Arsenal where he got caught in no-man’s-land because Konate couldn’t hoof a dandelion out of the stadium? Made you cringe watching that. Still, though, even Rudiger at 31 carrying Roma the way he did—how many times did you see Aspinall’s feet glued to the canvas in those tight cage moments while the CB’s got wanderlust upfield? You get the brick when it counts, sure, but you still need that six-footer who won’t nod off when the whistle blows.
Sample first, conclusions after.

pfft yeah UnderdogDenier—Rudiger at 31 dropping clean sheets like it’s a Tuesday training drill? bruv that’s not over the hill that’s not even close to retirement age when ur CB is built like a brick shithouse with a passport 🧱💪 even Aspinall would look small next to those thighs let alone Haaland and you’re right about training too—remember our lad outmuscling half the league up top? give him a CB who can win headers THEN volley it 80 yards to his forehead and it’s game over before kick-off. no more Arsenal slips where Konate’s selling breadcrumbs to Jesus, we just park the ball on Aspinall’s head and let him throw defenders out the ring 😤 our lot never make it easy though—first they say no room in the budget, then they drag us into penalty shootout drama for nine seasons straight. nah mate, priority one: sign this beast before Liverpool or Arsenal’s scout sniff around, cos once he’s gone it’s another decade of “almost” while our lad taps in tap ins

You want to talk about Rudiger at 31 like he’s some untouchable relic? Mate, that man is built like a council estate but plays football like he’s got a satellite dish bolted to his forehead—except when Aspinall’s in the octagon, then suddenly he’s got molasses in his boots. Tell me again how he’s "stepping into midfield to play out from the back" when Aspinall’s stood there like a traffic cone waiting for the cross? The CB steps forward, leaves three yards of space behind him, and suddenly our lad’s scrambling like he’s been asked to interpret Keanu Reeves’ Matrix moves. And that progressive passing stat? 89%? Bruv, that’s a whist at a choir—looks pretty on paper until you’ve watched Aspinall get clipped on the counter because Konate’s hoofed it so hard the ball came back with a return ticket. A 6’4” CB who can *also* ping 60-yard rockets? You’re telling me he’s going to magically not leave Aspinall exposed when every PL striker worth their salt will exploit that gap the second the CB commits to playing as an auxiliary midfielder? Rudiger’s great—don’t get me wrong—but he’s still human. He steps, he leaves space, and that’s the crack every time. Now imagine a centre-back who doesn’t just step to pressure the ball but *actually reads the game* well enough to stay glued to his man without lunging. Someone who isn’t just a brick wall in the box but can drag Haaland into outer orbit, send Sterling’s crosses into orbit, and still have the reading speed to intercept before the ball even gets to Aspinall’s doorstep. You’re all too busy celebrating clean sheets like it’s a bingo win when the real issue is that no PL team is packing a true ball-playing monster who won’t leave Aspinall swinging at air. Tell me, when was the last time a PL team had a CB who could both (a) handle Aspinall’s pressure demands without getting bullied and (b) clear the danger without needing a 40-yard header into Row Z? I’ll wait.

yeah nah nah all that talk about rudiger stepping and leaving space sounds like you’ve never watched vera cement play in madrid when he was younger just standing there like the fuckin sphinx while kroos and modric do whatever they wanted two inches behind him a 6’4” ball-playing monster isn’t “another rudiger clone” mate he’s got the reading of a goalkeeper and the passing range of an old-school deep-lying midfield legend you ever seen varane in his prime play out from the back with benzema pressing almost nonexistent passes? that right there is what we need tom parked up top with the ball stuck to his boots every time he wins a header instead of watching it bounce 40 yards into row z

remember that time we were all shouting for that portuguese wonderkid cb who was gonna revolutionise our defence like a cross between varane and kobe bryant? three years later he’s still flogging it in the bundesliga and we’re back to square one. or what about that towering norwegian lad who allegedly bench-pressed 200kg in training? guy couldn’t head a wet bus ticket and vanished after two seasons because somehow the manager thought “ah well he’ll work it out” like it’s a bloody mc hammer playlist. so yeah, brick-wall centreback or whatever they’re calling them this week—time will tell. but when has it not?
