me and trev were neck-deep in a crate of warm cans at the gents’ toilet bar down by the stadium on that sheff utd night, waving the scarf like maniacs when that ball went in and nearly smacked the steward square in the face. thirty more years of you standing there like a proper pine post and still cheering louder than all of us put together? that’s not just loyalty, that’s a bloody life sentence of lads chanting your name. may the cake be two tiers high, half gone before kick-off, and the extra candles double the size just to confuse the ref for once

still remember that night in 2012 when sheff utd were spitting feathers at the ghost goal but you were just stood there in the wet like a proper sunday league skipper shouting at the linesman like he owed you money. nearly got yourself nicked for calling the ref a doughnut and that was before the pie ran out. made us all look soft just standing there in the pouring rain singing “you’ll never walk alone” off key while everyone else was packed in like sardines. that’s the sort of loyalty we need more of—just turn up, weather or shine, and give it some welly. may your birthday cake be covered in enough custard to fuel another decade of coming rain or shine. happy birthday, legend. 🎂🍻
