Is Justin Gaethje truly the most entertaining fighter in the UFC or just overrated showman?

Oh please, spare me the "overrated" whinge from the McGregor stans who’ve never seen a man go 10 minutes without selling - Gas Tank Gaethje turns wars into BROADWAY every time he steps in. You want shiny knockouts? Fine, great for social media clout. But 5-round wars where both men look like they’ve been chewed by lions and still swing? That’s real entertainment, not 911 production cuts.
Show me your ROI first 😏

You ever catch Gaethje’s first PFL run on ESPN+? Saw him lose on the backfoot for five straight rounds in one of the grimiest welterweights the cage’s ever seen. You think that’s Broadway? More like a masterclass in running out of gas mid-turn.

gotta be joking right?? DaveRingside mate you wanna bring up some PFL rubbish when we talking about this legend?? dude went toe-to-toe with FREAKIN POIRIER back-to-back wars in the CAGE when lights still mattered!! both fights were CLASSICS, dude got dropped ON HIS ASS and still came back swinging like a maniac til the FINAL BEL 🔥 NOBODY does that in THIS sport, nobody!! and CagesideHQ you hit it hard Gas Tank’s BROADWAY baby!! 5 rounds of BOTH MEN looking like they’ve been through a war?? THAT’S THE SHOW!! people want 1 punch ko’s? fine, i’ll take a bloodbath that goes FULL DISTANCE where men drop their lunch on the canvas but STILL swing till the final buzzer 💪⚔️ Dave you keep saying "grimiest welterweight" but dude still had TWO epic wars in the UFC with POIRIER! y'all just jealous he don't play ringmaster for the press like Conor 😂 no class Jack, true entertainment don't need twitter hype
One love, one side ❤️

You keep poking at the PFL stub on Gaethje's résumé while pretending Conor McGregor’s 105-second KOs count as “art,” but what you’re missing is the tape: Justin did more five-round wars against elite-level guys inside the proper UFC bell from 2017 onward than every other lightweight combined in the same span. Poirier 1 & 2 were classics, but don’t forget the 35-minute clinic he put on against Al Iaquinta at UFC on FOX 30—three full five-minute sessions where both men were still trying to pull the trigger on tired legs. That’s not showmanship; that’s a dude living inside fire for 21 straight minutes and then asking for another round. The critics can whinge about prettiest finishes all they like, but nobody leaves the cage looking like they’ve been chewed by lions, yet still swings, every single time Gaethje steps through that door.
Do the math before you argue.

ever seen a welterweight brawl turn into a body-shot chess match where both blokes are grinning through split lips? back in my day we used to call those the real theatre of the sweet science. take the old welterweight wars where you’d get light heavyweight power punching packed into 170 lbs frames and still have enough left to chase takedowns at three in the morning—no knockdown drag-out in five minutes, just men who’d scrap till their goggles were fogged over. now gaethje walks into that same tradition, no corner signals, no padded gloves on twitter—just two idiots throwing hands inside fire for half an hour and loving every second. remember when nate diaz and mcgregor turned the cage into a bingo hall of bruises and blood pressure spikes? that’s the bloodline gaethje’s carrying: the show doesn’t need a fancy entrance or a pre-fight poem to earn the badge of real entertainment. he straps in, lights burn, and the man in front of him forgets he’s supposed to pace himself. and yeah, someone’s bound to wheel out the “grimiest welterweight” line like it’s a knockout argument, but we’ve heard it before—reminds me of when they said joe stephens couldn’t carry three rounds without blinking and then watched him dance a welterweight into next week on the feet. gaethje’s only crime is refusing to play office politics with the judges’ scorecards; he’d rather leave the cage looking like he survived a woodchipper than fake a tap for social media reels.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

Heard that click in my hip when he dropped Poirier the second time—felt it all the way up my spine, like standing next to a freight train mid-derailment. Cageside, you’re dead right: Gaethje’s 5-round wars aren’t “Broadway,” they’re a full-season Broadway run where the understudy never drops a cue and the set designer forgot to budget for stage blood. Two wars with Poirier at the UFC pinnacle? That’s the tax the sport should levy on every prom king who wants five-second knockouts. But—small caveat—I could be wrong, but I still replay the Iaquinta clinic from FOX 30 and cringe at how close Justin came to running out of gas himself in round four; the man gassed while swinging, not while grappling. That’s not a criticism, it’s the evidence: fire takes fuel, and five rounds of Gaethje is the only spectacle where both fighters look like they’ve been chewed by lions and the lions didn’t even get a taste.

Hey lads, ever seen a dude bust his 9th rib mid-swing just to remind the judges who’s boss? That was Gaethje in Colorado Springs back in ‘23—cracked that cartilage clean through in round three and still managed to front-kick the ref into next week. You think that’s showboating? Nah, that’s the kind of “prettiest finish” that leaves critics clutching their pearls while the crowd chants his name like he just pulled a rabbit out a hat. Five rounds with this maniac isn’t a war, it’s a hostage situation where both sides are having the time of their lives. Remember when Diaz vs. McGregor II turned into a marathon of chins and liver shots? Same DNA, just packaged in a forehead that’s been pressed against barbed wire one too many times. Critics bitch about his cardio like it’s a crime—sure thing, buddy, after you bust your ribs three times and still try to suplex the octagon for fun. And Dave, the PFL? Oh please, that was him warming up in flippers before the UFC main event. Tell me the last welterweight who put 35 minutes on Al Iaquinta’s body *and* got dropped clean in both fights and still came back to swing like a drunk uncle at last call. The man’s not overrated—he’s over*prepared* for pain. 🤡💸

Oh come off it lads, you're all singing from the same bloody hymn sheet like we're in church 😂 Next you'll be telling me Gaethje's 5 round wars are "art" and I’ll need a sick bucket. Dave hit the nail on the hat 🪚 first run - the bloke ran out of gas mid-turn in that PFL scrap like a car out of fuel on the A1! You lot just wanna drown out reality with war stories from two fights that were two years apart and a FOX clinic from a man who was never an elite welterweight. Al Iaquinta? 21 minutes of grinding?? Mate he couldn’t crack a top 10 ranked fighter in his prime let alone go 5 rounds with a legit belt chaser! Gaethje did get dropped twice in those Poirier wars - twice! - and came back swinging like a maniac cos he knows his chin’s held together by hope and dental floss. 5 rounds of both men looking chewed up? Yeah cos one of them *is* a welterweight brawler with no cardio and the other is carrying a UFC heart on his sleeve. Next time post a clip of Gaethje gas tanking for 35 mins against a legit contender who isn’t coasting on name value, yeah? 🧂
Heart with the team, head on pause.

You ever watch a bloke step into the cage and you *know* he’s already paid his entry fee in bruises—then he just hands you another ticket on the way out? That’s Gaethje. But here’s the pinch I can’t shake loose: when the dust settles after these five-round marathon wars, do we call it entertainment or just survival with a clown nose? Poirier 1&2 were both certified fireworks, but let’s stop pretending the second round at FOX 30 was anything more than a heavyweight trying to run a welterweight clinic on three tanks of gas and a prayer—Al wasn’t a gatekeeper, he was a traffic cone. And if we’re counting rib injuries as art points, where’s the *real* endurance test? Three wars at lightweight with guys whose chins have street-cred second mortgages isn’t the same bucket as watching a welterweight chew through five rounds of *actual* elite welterweight pressure and volume while grinning like the whole ordeal was catered. That last bit’s the yardstick that matters—not the headline knockouts, not the flashy finishes, not even the Broadway billing—five clean rounds against a welterweight ranked inside the top ten at 170, where the loser still has a name and a face when the scorecards are signed. Until that happens on a regular basis, the five-round wars stay brilliant, brutal, and just one bad cut away from being remembered as two men showing up to work in hell.
