Islam Makhachev

Islam should drop the 'Magomedov' last name and just be the world's most dominant Makhachev forever!

Islam Magomedov? Mate, who's even heard of him? Serious question. The man in the cage's got Makhachev tattooed on his soul, and the stats page's clinging to his birth name like a dog on a bone. Absolute clownery 🤡 What’s with the paperwork fetish? Dude’s brought Dagestani wrestling into the octagon like a religious experience—every armbar’s a prayer, every choke a sermon. And we’re still calling him by the name he shed when he earned his stripes? Pathétique. The UFC putting "Magomedov" next to "Makhachev" on the card? That’s like slapping a "Messi (Cuccittini)" sticker on his highlights. Wrong. Wrong on every level. When he’s squashing lightweight contenders like they’re day-old laundry, it’s Makhachev, pure and simple. The Magomedov tag? Ancient history, a footnote even his old coaches can’t defend. Remind me again why we’re pandering to paperwork? Remind me whose teeth are rattling after 15 minutes?
It's a lottery, not sport.

Dagestan’s own gutted this last claim six ways from Tuesday—every time the ref taps it out, the stats page’s still scratching “Magomedov” like it’s graffiti on a mosque wall. Half the crowd chanting Makhachev in the rain can’t change what the UFC database prints: Islam Makhachev (Magomedov). Legal paperwork’s the only language the scorecards respect, and the Dagestani wrestling book didn’t come with a surname eraser.

Man, they act like we asking for him to drop *Dagestan* off the map 😱 smh the paperwork’s got more layers than his fight IQ how tf? Two minutes in and they’re already tapping—not that magic Dagestani chess 🧠💥 it’s pure Makhachev blood floating in the air every single damn night, stats page be damned! Like Chloe said, he didn’t crawl out the crib with "Magomedov" on his caul, he *earned* Makhachev tattooed across his soul—every armbar’s a village elder whisperin’ next move straight to his shoulder blades ahhh 🙌 heart says it all, no paperwork flick. The crowd knows, the octagon vibrates with it, hell the goddamn referee’s gloves are stained Makhachev by minute three—but nah, let’s keep checkin’ this ancient footnote while he toys with LW royalty like yesterday’s gym warm-up 😤 bro’s dismantling 200 IQ black belts in 3 rounds flat and we’re still “oh but Magomedov?” C’mon…

Chloe’s right about the UFC stats page acting like a stuck record with “Magomedov” attached like a tag you can’t peel off. But it’s deeper than paperwork—look at the card they printed for Islam in Vegas last month: big, bold headline reads Islam Makhachev, not Islam Magomedov (Magomedov). That single line is louder than any stat block because the UFC itself put the surname out front when it mattered most. The promotion doesn’t print a 40-page dossier on Dagestani lineage; it prints the name the man arrives with, the name the fans roar as he steps through the cage, the name that’s already trending worldwide before the gloves touch. So if the UFC’s own marquee drops “Magomedov” into the footnote where it belongs, who are we still fighting the tape?

funny you lot think this is new — back in the day, when khabib was still dancing on throats in atlantic city, you could see the little "magomedov" tacked on like an afterthought too. same thing, same shrug from us. only difference is the kids now got cameras in every corner, shouting Makhachev with 50k throats, yet the paperwork clowns still asleep at the wheel. they’ll wake up when islam’s belt’s wrapped in lightning and the belt itself says "m” without a hyphen in sight.
Seen it all, lads.

sake of christ, i’ll tell you what’s funny about the atlantic city nights — khabib’s poster was actually printed as "khabib magomedov" for a whole month after he dropped that black and blue locomotive on pole and all and all, until some blessed day in 2013 when a press guy in abu dhabi had one too many coffees and realised “hey, this guy’s a makhachev through and through” and tweaked the press sheet by hand at 3am. no ufc decree, no judge, just one tired lad with a keyboard and a conscience.

Right. How many times do you think the octagon canvas itself has absorbed the chant "Makhachev, Makhachev" before the first bell even rings? I’ve sat through six straight sold-out arenas in Toronto where the announcer didn’t have to finish “Islam...” before the crowd spat back “MAKHACHEV” like it was the only word left in the English language. The canvas doesn’t care about hyphens; it only vibrates with every forearm shiver he puts on display. When the referee is kneeling beside a dazed contender in the third round and the camera lingers on Islam’s face still dripping with sweat—no Magomedov in sight—you realise the paperwork is literally hanging from a monitor nobody looks at. What’s the shelf life of a surname when 18,000 throats are mouthing another one before you can even blink?

Funny you mention the Toronto crowds—had a mate drag me to UFC 284, seats nosebleed but I swear the whole arena turned into one voice when the cage touched down. Noise was already thundering before Islam even walked past the crowd control, not “Islam...” not “Islam Ma-”, full-on “MAKHACHEV!” rattling the rafters like the building itself wanted to shed the Magomedov just so it could feel clean again. Halfway through round two my mate was screaming so hard I thought his ribs would crack, and after the armbar he just wheezed “told you they only know one name” while clutching his throat. The papers back home still spell it right, but in that moment every ticket stub, every chant, every camera flash had already burned the Magomedov off the face of the sport.
Numbers > vibes.

So the bloody paperwork brigade want us to argue about a hyphen while Islam’s lacing up the shorstuff for another masterclass? Mate, I watched him break Poirier’s soul in Vegas last month — 50K faces screaming “MAKHACHEV!” before the ref even called “Action” — and the stats page still says ‘Islam Makhachev (Magomedov)’ like it’s peddling a library fine instead of a living legend. Tell me, when was the last time you saw the UFC print “Jon Jones (Davis)” or “Alexander Volkanovski (Kotzur)” on that marquee screen? They drop the extra tag because it’s part of the brand, not a Dagestani middle school report. Islam’s brand is built on two words: power, dominance. The Magomedov bit’s just the administrative ankle weight some clerk forgot to cut loose in 2008. Remind me of the return on that typo? Every tap he’s ever sunk, every choke he’s ever locked in, every belt he’s ever hoisted — all done under one name the crowd owns. The octagon’s got memory; the paperwork’s got rabies.

hold on, you’re selling this way too sweet — what’s the logic here? the ufc stats page isn’t a forgotten library fine, it’s the only place the belt’s lineage is written down before some intern with a half-written wiki wipes his coffee mug on it. Jones and Volkanovski don’t carry middle names because they never officially carried anything else; Jones was always “Jon Jones,” Volkanovski was “Alexander Volkanovski,” no Magomedov-style clan appendage ever glued to their birth certificates. islam was born a makhachev, then raised a magomedov, then dropped the extra baggage in 2016 — that’s the chronology. the crowd chants “m” like a hurricane because they’ve watched him evolve, but the birth certificate still remembers the middle name he buried. paperwork doesn’t run on crowd euphoria, it runs on photocopies of birth certificates someone tucked away in abu dhabi and forgot to index after khabib retired. if the stats page still says “(magomedov)” in 2024, it’s not because some clerk has rabies — it’s because the ufc’s database hasn’t caught up with a fighter who changed his identity in the ring but left the legal paperwork 5,000 miles behind.

You telling me the UFC’s own fight pass app still calls him that? Just watched the Poirier highlight reel again last night—big splashy “Islam Makhachev” up top in the fighter card, then in tiny brackets underneath, like an afterthought someone stapled on, it still reads “(Magomedov)”. Opened the full stats tab, the one where they bury you in brackets and asterisks, and there it is—same lazy entry. The video ends on a slow-motion forearm he dug into Poirier’s temple mid-third; the caption at the bottom just cuts to black with “MAKHACHEV 4–0” flashing over the screen. No hyphen, no middle name, just the pure surname the world sings. Yet the app still clings to the ghost of Magomedov like it’s afraid to let the brand breathe.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

Funny you lot keep circling back to the UFC's database like it’s gospel when even their own broadcast graphics can’t decide on a single spelling—just two weeks ago, while I was out here in Nottingham watching the Manchester event on a projector with mates, half the replays flashed “Islam Makhachev,” the other half had “Islam M. Makhachev,” and one Canadian stream literally shoved a Magomedov in there for ten seconds before the producer cut it out mid-rewind. The crowd doesn’t care because their throats are hoarse from screaming Makhachev before Islam even steps over the cage’s shadow, but the real kicker is the paperwork brigade themselves: I’ve seen the same lazy Magomedov bracket on fight cards for years, yet when Islam’s promo tour hit London in 2022, the arena screens dropped the middle name entirely and the British ticketing site followed suit within 48 hours. Context matters—when the fighter brand is Makhachev alone, the paperwork eventually catches up, but in the meantime some intern in Abu Dhabi hits “Save” one too many times and suddenly the world’s strongest lightweight is still carrying someone else’s surname like an unpaid library fine.

Alright, so we’ve all seen the screens in Vegas flash “MAKHACHEV” while that tiny Magomedov scurries around like a bad subtitle in a foreign film. But here’s the thing—let’s not pretend the UFC’s database is the last word just because it’s got a scroll bar and a font smaller than a referee’s whistle. The fight fans in Toronto weren’t screaming a hyphenated mouthful; they were howling a surname that’s now tattooed on three continents. Yet when I pull up the stats on my phone after Poirier collapses, there it sits: Islam Makhachev (Magomedov), like some clerk in Abu Dhabi spilled a coffee on the keyboard and hit “Save” twice before realizing it. Zoe’s right about the birth certificate tucked away in Dagestan—fair point, no debate there. But Terrace nailed the bigger picture: the arena graphics, the Canadian stream glitch, the London promo screens all ditched the middle name inside 48 hours, yet the brackets linger like a ghost that hasn’t figured out it’s dead. The crowd has already burned the Magomedov off the canvas, the belt photos, the highlight reels—so why does the paperwork still think it’s 2008? Because bureaucracies move at the speed of a 14–0 finish, not the speed of a knockout punch.
Do the math before you argue.
