remember when we used to huddle around that old laptop in the pub down by the quayside, the one where the screen kept cutting out but we didn’t care because it was flyweight yuri vs petr yan? back then everyone in the crowd was like "oh yeah, another yan fight, he'll dance around a bit and then get points-win" but then—bam—the Romero knockout. i swear half the pub spilled their pints when that overhand right dropped him like a sack of spuds. and then the absolute pandemonium when petr marched to the cage throwing shit at everyone laughing in his face.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

that overhand right straight to the liver though... i was actually stood right behind the walkway at work, full chef whites on, spatula in hand—suddenly the telly in the break room flashed, yuri’s just got rocked, next frame everyone’s hugging, one bloke knocked over a crate of tomatoes. the bosses nearly sacked us all for making the mess but we didn’t care, we just kept replaying that right hand like it was our last night on earth. after that romero bomb, petr’s like “nah mate, you lot are the kings now”—and we bloody were for a second, royally pissed off a tomato aisle!
You don't abandon your own.

ever seen that old clip from the cosmonaut house show where petr’s walking out and some grandad in the crowd’s already crying before the first bell even rings? dude had those little yan flags duct-taped to his walking stick like it was the fucking coronation already. i remember queueing up for a kebab after and this lot were doing this stupid victory dance in the chip shop queue, the bloke behind the counter just stared like we’d lost the plot – which, let’s be honest, we probably had. but that’s the magic of petr, innit? makes even the soberest lads behave like they’ve won the lottery before the first round starts.
Seen it all, lads.

Started collecting Yan posters right after that Romero fight—still got the bruise on my knee from slipping off the stool when that right hand hit the deck. It’s funny how the crowd felt then versus now: back in the day we used to shiver together in those draughty little pubs, betting plastic pints on whether Petr would finish them quick or let us enjoy the drama for at least three rounds. Those three years felt like a family road trip that never reached the destination, just kept throwing up new surprises every pit stop. Nowadays we’re in proper arenas, seats comfy enough to nap in, and half the time I catch myself looking around wondering where everyone’s standing-room-only glee went. The king still reigns, sure, but the castle’s got central heating now and the moat’s been filled in for VIP suites. No more trembling legs on a broken laptop charger; instead, we wait in line for merch that actually fits and debates whether the new stripe pattern on his trunks matches his mood that night. Still feels electric—just in a different key, a slower boil instead of the rush of that first fire.

ever seen the way those old italian black-and-white clips wobble just before the bell rings? it’s like the universe pauses, holds its breath, and then—*click*—the screen steadies, petr steps in, and boom, you’re already grinning before the first strike. that’s the exact feeling i got ringside at moscow arena during the romero card, sitting between two dads who’d driven all night just to see him touch gloves. one of them had made a sign that just read “OUR KING” in crayon on a pizza box, and halfway through the second round he was already crying into a half-eaten boiled sweet because he swore he’d seen petr wink at him. the overhand right? absolute poetry. the liver shot’s such a brutal angle you practically taste it through the telly. when it landed, the entire third row erupted like we’d just scored a last-minute winner in the cup final, and i tell you true—i haven’t felt that pure, unfiltered joy since the leafs last made the playoffs in ’93. that fight wasn’t just a knockout, it was a coronation broadcast live to anyone with a pulse and a kettle on.
Petr Yan cage fight
Been here longer than some have followed.

What’s with all this nostalgia-fest over one punch? That Romero right isn’t even the half of it—we’ve had two dozen other lights-out haymakers since then, but nah, suddenly everyone’s weeping into their pints over the first one that ever made the deck shake.

remember when petr used to duck into the pub after weigh-ins and we’d all go *"oh no he’s here, brace for him bouncing on the barstool like a kangaroo on steroids"* but then he’d just order a flat white and a side of humble pie with a side of *"today’s my day, lads"* and we’d all nod like *"yeah mate, today’s your day alright"* while secretly knowing half of us had two dollars each way on a third-round decision just in case? then bam—romero dropped like he owed pete twenty bucks and we all stood there like *"wait what just happened to our plans"* before the entire pub started chanting *"PETER! PETER!"* like he was wembley headlining not some random saturday night card in brisbane 😂 the barmaid still won’t let us forget how we tipped her in literal fist bumps after that right hand—she now calls me "King Chump" every time i walk in with a fresh tattoo reference drawn on a napkin
Only serious one here — barely.
