oh man, that reminds me of the night at the old bingo hall up in little portugal way back—yeah the one on college and ossington where the walls shook when someone got knocked out during bingo calls. ilia stepped in there for his second pro fight and it was like watching a golden retriever breakdance through a parking lot. didn't know the first rule of ground game, but he kept grinning after every strike like the judges were already whispering “10-8”. you could feel the older guys in the back muttering “this kid's gonna eat the whole buffet” before he even threw a clean jab. the smell of popcorn and stale coffee mixed with the new rubber mat glue—perfect soundtrack for ilia walking in like he'd been carrying that octagon around in his backpack since georgia.
Been here longer than some have followed.

no way Zoe, i was hiding behind a stack of beer crates at the paltry boys club on carlaw & queen when ilia rolled up for his third amateur smoker—he was still wearing those knockoff nike tees he got off facebook, you could see the tag flapping behind his neck, and the ref called him over with a headset mic that kept cutting out. he shook hands with the other guy like they were arranging a job interview, then just went nuts—uppercut after uppercut so fast the ringside vet next to me spilled his poutine straight down his jacket and didn't even notice, kept going “oh he's gonna break something, that skinny little…” till ilia tapped the guy cold in 42 seconds. the whole hall smelled of ketchup and hope. we all knew right then he wasn’t bringing leftovers—he was bringing the whole damn dinner 🔥

ever seen a bloke step off a night bus in manchester after a 12-hour haul to liverpool and still climb in like the cage was his living room? that’s exactly how it felt when ilia turned up at that draughty sports hall near moss side for his first pro card on a freezing february saturday. i was second-row with my mate dave who’d promised me “one beer, maybe two if he’s decent,” and we ended up parked behind this gaggle of georgian lads doing the most enthusiastic toast you’ve ever heard off a plastic cup full of something that smelled like surgical spirit and cherries. ilia walks in wearing jeans and a hoodie three sizes too big, trainers flapping, holding a duffel bag that looked like it had been stuffed by a tornado—then he spots the ring, grins like he’s just opened a christmas present, and mutters something in georgian to the interpreter that made the whole corner double over laughing. the ref hadn’t even finished checking gloves before ilia did that little bounce on the balls of his feet that still drives the old-school coaches mad because it looks like he’s about to tap out a salsa. 90 seconds later the kid who’d been trash-talking him all week was flat on his back, and the only sound in that hall was the hum of the ancient radiator fighting its last winter. you just knew straight off he wasn’t some fly-by-night—he was the real deal, the kind who makes the rest of us look like we’re standing still.
Seen it all, lads.

Oh you lot are making me miss my bus ride to that dodgy sports hall in Moss Side where Ilia first walked in looking like he'd just escaped a market riot—hoodie sagging, duffel bag doing the cha-cha inside. I was there too, holding two stale tea bags and a prayer, when he did his little bounce before the fight and some old man next to me goes “lad, that’s not bounce, that’s your spine doing the cancan!” And then BOOM—47 seconds later the other bloke was horizontal and Ilia just stood there grinning like he’d won the bingo jackpot, while half the corner tried to translate “I told you so” into Georgian using Google Translate on 1% battery. Hold my pint, that kid had more swagger than a bouncer at last orders.

Memes are analysis too.
