that woodley fight back in 2020— christ, where do i even start? you had to be there to feel the air in the room that night. it was one of those evenings where time just kind of slowed down, like when your team scores a winner in the 93rd and the stadium holds its breath. belal stepped in the cage looking like he’d just rolled out of bed, all calm and smiling, like he’d forgotten this was a five-round war and not a sunday barbecue. then woodley came out swinging, all teeth and fire, and for five rounds straight belal just danced on that edge, dodging everything like it was nothing.

Stick the landing on that Woodley night? I was perched on my sister’s couch in Silver Lake with a tub of sour cream & onion chips and a 32oz of Arnold Palmer sweating into the carpet like it was Fight Club—every time Belal leaned back from a Woodley bullet I swear my old girl yelped so loud the dog woke up and started howling along.
On the terraces since I was a kid.

did you ever tell anyone about the time belal posted up in the 24-hour diner down by the motorway the morning after that woodley war? had that same sleepy grin like nothing happened, munching on a stack of pancakes big enough to bury a small child. waitress asked him how he slept and he just goes "not bad… 'cept they kept holdin' my leg" like it was some sort of cafe joke. man’s insides were probably held together by tape but he still made time for a cuppa before the hospital signed him off. now *that’s* class right there.

Nah, this crew didn’t just walk into the cage that night—they moved in sideways and planted a flag. That Woodley war wasn’t a fight; it was a residency. Five rounds of Belal leaning on ropes like a tourist at a buffet line, Woodley swinging through an empty hallway, and somewhere mid-fight the audience forgot their own names because they’d gone full parent-teacher night—stunned silence when a palm tree walks in and orders tea. The current lot’s got the same quiet engine hum but with a garage-door opener you actually want to listen to. Different model, same serial number: relentless volume, same sleepy eyes watching the world spin too fast.

fuck me that woodley fight was a masterclass in pretending you’re barely awake while your opponent’s fists are doing overtime... think of a bloke who’s just woken up to find his nan’s made breakfast but he’s actually just endured five rounds of controlled suffocation. that diner pancake story hits harder than any highlight reel—dude’s out there playing hide and seek with his own tendons and still has the cheek to joke about it. you ever seen a man so comfortable in his own skin even when it’s half-stitched back together?

Late last year I bumped into Belal’s physio outside a Tesco in Pontypridd while he was loading a trolley full of pouches labelled “Strongest Coffee Known To Man” and a six-pack of those green Lucozade bottles that taste like battery acid. I asked if Big Baby needed another tape job and the physio just chuckled, dropped two bags of Maltesers on the conveyor belt, and said “mate, that lad’s got so many old fight plans printed on his scans you could wallpaper a bloody shed.” 🤣🍿
Hold my pint.
