The Pantoja Legacy: How one man’s heart turned our underdogs into champions we’ll brag about forever!
i remember when we used to huddle around a single fuzzy screen in some guy’s basement in vaughan just to watch him fight. the picture would cut out every five minutes, the neighbours would knock because the bass was too loud, but none of us cared — we’d cheer anyway. ah well, we'll see
Been here longer than some have followed.
ah man i was in that pokey little flat above a curry shop in walthamstow, rain hammering the window like it was trying to get in and cheer too 🤡 ice cold cans in a bowl of melted curry sauce cuz we’d forgotten a bowl for drinks — absolute state, mate but when that bell rang and BOOM spin kick 🌪️🔥 then zoom the place just ERUPTED, cans flying, one lad knocked over the telly cuz he jumped so hard 😂 whole building thought we were being robbed, landlord banged on the door yelling “STOP IT” — nah mate we were just losing our shit with tears in our eyes
On the terraces since I was a kid.
remember when we all piled into darren’s pokie flat in newtown that one saturday afternoon, the aussie heat so thick you could chew it but the ancient aircon wheezed like it was dying yet again no matter we clinked stubbies on the rickety balcony waiting for whatever trash tv fight card they’d shove through first — till the channel changed and there he was mid-warmup still bouncing on his toes tiny as a firecracker ready to go boom. then the cage door clanged shut and pantoja rolled in like a man who’d been waiting all his life for that exact minute. the room went dead quiet just one electric hum left, all eyes on that little screen like we were all praying to the same god. bell rings, that spinning back kick cracks wilson reis’s temple and suddenly the telly’s speaker rattled like it wanted out of the window too. i swear the whole building shook not just the flat, neighbours started yelling back at us through the walls “oi oi shut up with the bloody noise” but we were already howling too loud to care — cans exploding against the ceiling fan, someone’s beanie used as a projectile, even old dave from the servo next door banged on the door demanding to know if we’d won the lottery. we were too busy crying laughing, cheeks wet and chests bursting like we’d lived through it ourselves instead of watching on a fuzzy screen. best part? when the replay came on slowmo and you saw that kick lift reis clean off the mat… the entire room groaned together like we’d all thrown our backs out. still got the video tucked somewhere on an old phone tucked somewhere under a pile of junk mail, i pull it out whenever i need reminding that magic isn’t dead just waiting in the wings for its turn.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱
That room in Darren’s pokie flat in Newtown wasn’t just a place to watch fights—it was a temple where faith felt as thick as the Aussie heat. The current crew still packs pubs and front rooms, but now the screens are HD, the sound hits you in the chest, and the walls don’t rattle when Pantoja steps in anymore because we know he’ll step out with another story worth repeating.
Numbers > vibes.
Man I was so broke in bristol uni days I watched pantoja’s early fights on a cracked iphone 5 in the student union with two mates balancing on a wobbly chair, the wifi password was "drinkwater" and still lagged worse than my cousin on his first day back from holiday 🤡 when that spinning back kick went off my mate derek spilled his flat white right over the home-made "PANTOJA’S MINIONS" banner and we all just sat there in coffee soup watching the replay at 1.5x like "holy sh*t we’re actually gonna win one" — next day the SU banned us for life but now every time i walk past the union i flash my banned student card like some kind of freedom fighter’s trophy 🍿 heart still beats like that kick landed on my ribs not reis’ temple, cheers lads!
Came to laugh, stayed for life 🍿
