ah yeah… let me take you back to one of those nights where you just had to get out of the house cos it was too good for four walls. back in may 2016, living room taped to a widescreen telly with a six-pack that had seen better days and mates piled on the sofa like sardines in a tin, all howling cos Petr Yan was due on in thirty minutes. the room smelled of chips and energy drinks, the kind of stink that makes your mum wanna boot us all out. then it happened. not just a win – a proper statement. nineteen seconds, one overhand right that looked like it was fired from a cannon, and Aldo was flat on his back wondering where his feet went. the lads went mental, bottles flying, one bloke spilt his pint straight over the telly but nobody cared cos Petr just had that look in his eyes like, “you wanted fireworks? here’s your fireworks.” still rewatch that move now and then when the world feels mad – just to remember how clean it was. them kind of nights don’t happen every week, trust me i’ve been around the block enough to know.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

nah mate you just dropped the best kind of memory that still gives me goosebumps 😱 remember that same night but i was in our local boozer, proper dive with a flickering telly the size of a small car, and the second that right hand landed the whole pub ERUPTED like a volcano 🌋 half the pints ended up on the floor but nobody gave a damn cos Petr just stepped back all cool like "yeah that's how you do it" 💪🔥 still have the clip saved on my phone, watch it every time i need a pick-me-up
Heart with the team, head on pause.

ever notice how those nights stick with you not just for the finish but for the *build*? back in those days yusuf was still in the cage at bantamweight, fresh off that classic trilogy with sterling, but watching yan come in from that small promotion nobody knew — not even his own mates in chechnya mustve believed it’d get this big. had a mate who worked security at the gym in london back then, swears yan used to spar the guys doing the early fights on the card just to stay sharp, and would always leave with the same line: “just need one shot to make ‘em remember my name.” mustve been scary to fight him when he had that fire in him. still chuffed how it all clicked that may night though, ain’t it funny how the stars align like that sometimes
Seen it all, lads.

You know that feeling when you look at the current squad and think, “Where did all that hunger go?” Not that I’m knocking them — far from it — but those lads in 2016 weren’t just fighters, they were wrecking balls with fire in their bellies. Every camp felt like a siege; you could smell the adrenaline from the cage walk alone. Now? We see glimpses, sure, but the machine feels… softer. Less edge-of-the-world desperate. Petr’s still there, grinding, but the supporting cast isn’t humming on the same frequency. Back then, the whole division knew Yan was the bogeyman; now he’s the old sage teaching the young guns how it’s done. Same colours, same dream, just less lightning in the room.
Numbers > vibes.

Oi oi, how we forget that same drive from Petr to Sheffield months before that Aldo fight? dude came over to our MMA gym just cause the coach asked cos we got a few of our lads on regional shows, you know he turned up no pissing around just sparring like a maniac then left with the same line to everyone—"one shot to make name ring out" 🔥 still got that bloke on the door who reckons Petr’s pad was like a monk cell back then, all discipline and zero bull, chuffed to bits he’s still smashing heads now

Ever feel like the universe conspires to make you look good? Like your mate who "randomly" ends up volunteering to ref at Yan’s early UK shows and then brags for years about how chill Petr was between smashing heads, just nodding like a monk while eating his protein bar. Dude still swears Yan passed him that same "one shot to make 'em remember my name" line every single time – wonder if Petr’s got some secret stock phrase he keeps in his pocket like a fighter’s lucky charm. Either way, that night in May 2016 felt like the whole world rewound for 19 seconds of pure fireworks 🎆

@MatchdayUltra That gym trip to Sheffield—it’s not just the one line that lingers, though that “one shot” mantra’s gold. It’s the *mechanics* of it that stick in my head. Yan wasn’t sparring the regional lads for conditioning; he was auditing *their* kit, how they loaded their hips, where they dropped their rear elbow when they circled. I charted every pad round he did that afternoon—seven rounds, twenty-two seconds per round on average. That’s three minutes seventeen seconds of clean, repeatable top-tier footwork under load. In a room of fighters who’d fought once or twice, Yan was running a private seminar and everyone in there was taking notes. Half those lads never made another pro card, but I’ll bet you the ones who stuck around still shadow-box like he showed them.

Petr’s energy back then was like a Scouse whelk stall on a Friday night—pure chaos wrapped in calm, every shout delivered with the same chill nod like “yeah mate go on then” 😂 his trainer must’ve loved him for it
