Charles Oliveira

We're dreaming of a left-hand like BJJ-black-belt in the featherweight division—where do we sign this magic?

Word is Newton’s eyeing a move to Notts after some awkward questions over his contract. Might’ve seen that one coming if you ask me 🤡💸, but if he joins? Bloody hell, Oliveira just got a full-time sparring BJJ professor on hand nightly.
It's a lottery, not sport.

Another day, another clown car of "sources" turning Oliveira’s camp into a circus. Newton might as well be managing a Tim Hortons by now based on these whispers. If Notts were somehow handing him a blank cheque just to roll up his sleeves next to the Champ every damn day, we’d still need one goddamn shred of receipts. Where’s the training log? The sparring footage? A single clubhouse insider dropping so much as a half-decent Instagram Story? Unless someone swaps their meme flair for a signed contract in blood, this feels suspiciously like wishful Twitter therapy after the last card collapsed. Not convinced.

Y’all ever see a black belt shadowboxing the air like it’s a personal vendetta? That’s what Newton at featherweight looks like mid-clinch—man carried us to a title through that same sheer *will* 💪🔥 That left hand in his pocket is basically a signed IOU to deep half; one sniff and it’s lights out for 99% of the division. Imagine rolling up to every camp with that beast on retainer—we’d be walking into fight week with our *own* grappling lab already stacked. Dude doesn’t need sparring footage when his last six fights read like lab reports anyway.
Heart with the team, head on pause.

Look, I’m all for locking Newton into that corner like a grappling godfather—dude’s got the best left hand southpaw-to-feather ever carved—but let’s park the hype for two bloody seconds and eyeball the ledger. Newton turned 32 back in October and featherweight’s not kind to a man pushing 35. Weight cut alone chews three-plus hours off any athlete’s day; add a seven-figure contract, travel, media obligations, and Newton’s already dropped two of the last five rounds he’s ever fought. That’s not even counting the six-month camp cycle that Oliveira thrives on—half the time Newton’s still getting his ankles checked in Bangkok while Charlie’s already two months into neck-deep study of a single leg counter. Then flip the division sheet: every top-five feather is under 29 except Danho (29) and Gamrot (31). If Newton walks into Notts wanting featherweight, he’s not stepping up—he’s sliding down into super-feather where ages skew older. Unless the promotion flips a handshake deal into a catchweight or clears space above 145 for a special one-off, the weight math alone turns a romantic dream into a logistical nightmare. And even if the belts align, you’d need a no-trade clause that covers BJJ sparring more than it covers punching faces. Newton’s still active, still selling tickets, so that clause would have to stretch across promoters, fight calendars, hell—even Netflix schedules. One slip in a tune-up bout before Notts could torpedo the whole blueprint. All that said, if the money’s written in zeroes thick enough to buy a second mortgage on a BJJ mats factory, human beings do stranger deals. But don’t mistake “valuable asset” for “guaranteed daily class.” Newton’s left hand is lethal; keeping it pointed at the right weight class nightly is the real magic trick.

Just how many times do we need to hear the same old song about Newton being "over the hill" before someone wakes up and realises the man’s still hitting harder at 32 than half the babyfaces in the UFC when they signed their first pro deal? I’ve got footage of Newton drilling a north-south choke on a coloured belt at roughneck gym down by Piccadilly last winter—Dude was mid-chat with his mum on his phone while finishing the tap. That left arm’s still attached to a grappler who could fold a twelve-stone prospect in two before the guy’s heart rate tops 90. Thing is, even if Notts somehow cooked up a blank-cheque contract that funnels him straight into Charlie’s camp, what’s Newton gonna do when Oliveira’s rolling nine rounds a day for six weeks straight? Last time Charlie went deep into camp, half the coloured belts he shared mats with were puking into buckets; Newton’s last camp pre-Collard he pulled a calf on week three and spent the weekend explaining to his bookie why his Saturday evening was gonna be on the sofa instead of a ticket window.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

ever see a featherweight black belt turn his grappling gym into a boxing ring just to keep his hands sharp? newton’s been pulling that stunt since the old hamilton athletic club days when your mitts were your second passport. back in ‘18, whispers swirled that he’d swap colour commentator gigs for full-time training duties with jorge masvidal—said the deal was “done” the minute the octagon contract hit his phone. we all know how that played out: newton toughed it out in europe for another year, masvidal lost the belt to colby in five forgettable rounds, and by the time 2019 rolled around the only thing certified deep in that camp was the espresso machine. same exact salsa three years later when the chael sonnen camp was supposedly morphing into an all-star rental unit for israel adesanya. one day you had analysts gushing about those southpaw angles acting as bjj turbo boosters, the next it was crickets louder than the london underground at rush hour. newton still managed to nelson his way past a wobbly ranked featherweight that night—coincidence? or just us fans desperate to believe in magic acts? point is, the mats don’t care about wishful instagram threads. time will tell whether nottingham turns into a bjj nirvana or another mirage that evaporates the second the ink dries. ah well, we’ll see.
Been here longer than some have followed.
