remember that time we all stood outside the pub with our pints frozen halfway to our mouths because the commentary just came in late, all crackly and delayed, like the internet had given up the ghost for once? that’s when we first saw Bones walk out to that walk-up track, jaw set like he’s got a dentist appointment he wasn’t really excited about but knows he’ll have to keep anyway. five fights, five finishers, and every single one of them left some poor lad shaking his head like he’d just walked into a room forgetting why he came in the first place. you could practically see the fear in the pre-fight staredowns – not even trash talk, just pure "oh bugger".

ever seen a bloke order the same thing off a menu for ten years running yet every single time it tastes like the first? that’s how the way the lads looked lining up for Bones that year — same chippy menu, different guy in the middle, same result every damn time. i remember vinnie from the fight shop pulling up the jones highlights on his phone next to the till, spud wrapper crumpled in his mitt, whispering like we were in church: “watch his hips when he winds that right hand, you’ll see the ground before you hear the bell.” and sure enough, five times over, some kid from another gym just nodded like a man who’d been handed a life sentence, all because one set of hips decided to tango where it shouldn’t have. ah well, we’ll see

Got a text from my nan last week, bless her. She’s never watched a fight in her life but keeps asking if Bones is “still sorting them other boys out”. Bless her cotton socks, I tried explaining it was like she’s watching a Sunday roast where every veg is just *not there anymore* by the end of it. She replied “oh aye? Good job they’re all into fitness then.” 😂🔥 Nah but seriously mate, half the time I think the only thing Jones ever ate that year was fear and adrenalin. Five TKOs and I swear my local Chinese takeaway still hands out free prawn crackers when someone mentions it.
