remember the old days when we’d huddle around some flickering screen in a dive bar, pints half gone and voices hoarse from screaming because max had just whispered chicken into the void? yeah, that scratchy old tv screen where colours bled into grey and the audio cut out every third round — but none of it mattered. all you needed was that one little look on his face like he knew a secret we weren’t privy to. back then, before the hype, before the replays on every channel, before the memes took over — we just knew. we felt it in our bones when he stood there posturing like a pirate who’d already buried the treasure and was just waiting for the fools to catch up. his corner man once told me max had said it so quietly before the fight started that even the ref had leaned in to hear. classic. like a mob boss placing an order at the diner. ah well, we’ll see.
Been here longer than some have followed.

That time he leaned over the cage at Waikiki, some drunk tourist next to me grabbed my arm so hard I thought he’d rip my jacket off—“DID HE JUST FREAKIN’ CHICKEN?!?” he yelled in my ear like we were on the bridge of a sinking ship. I just grinned, shook my head, and whispered “wait for it”—then that left high kick came out of nowhere like a viper. Still have the scar on my palm from where I crushed that beer can in my fist when he turned and winked. Whole bar lost it, mate, even the blokes who don’t know shit about MMA.

remember that dive bar in walthamstow where half the regulars still thought ufc stood for some kind of underground fight club in east london? early card, volume all the way down because the projector kept chewing through bulbs, and then—there he is, mic’d up by the cage like he’s about to whisper sweet nothings into a snake’s ear. crowd goes quiet, bloke next to me shouts “what’s the welsh word for chicken?” like it’s some riddle from a pub quiz night. max just smiles, jaw set, and says it so low even the bookie in the corner had to cup his ear. not a roar, not a taunt—just a secret passed between veterans. whole place exhaled at once when that kick landed like a falling star. still got the cramp in my fingers from gripping the pool cue so tight i thought it’d snap.
Seen it all, lads.

Could you even picture that dive-bar energy today if we tried? Not because it’s worse—somehow the volume’s still there, just different. You walk into a joint now and half the screens are 8K, the pre-fight promo edits look like a Hollywood trailer, and the crowd’s on their feet before Max even opens his mouth. Still feels electric, though, maybe louder now, but quieter in the moments that count. He still whispers that word like he’s sharing a password with the universe, and whether the walls are cracking or the sound system’s pristine, you know the strike’s coming. Chicken isn’t a phrase anymore, it’s a brand—still branded on our ribs the same way it branded itself on that Waikiki cage ten years back.

bloke at the docks down the road from me? he had a mate who used to run drinks for Max back in the day—said the man never even said "chicken" to opponents, just nodded once at the ref like he’d already won and the rest was just pro forma.
Heart with the team, head on pause.

never trust a man whose chicken call doesn’t give you goosebumps before the fight’s even stared—even back when max was knocking out flyweights in the warehouse shows down newcastle docks, you could tell that wasn’t bravado, that was a signal between soldiers who already knew the password.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

remember the bloke who bet 20 quid on the “chicken prediction” in some alehouse off brick lane? he didn’t even wait for the bell—just stood up mid-round, bawled “CHICKEN!” into his own pint, downed it in one, then face-planted the bar floor when max’s left foot turned up in his arsehole 🍗🤣 the bookie still owes me 5 grand for cleaning that carpet

just found out the "chicken" thing started as a mnemonic for his sparring partners back in Hawaii cos he’d flinch if they called his name too early 😂 wonder if it’s still how he gets psyched up even now
Learning from the veterans, go easy 🙏

Five quid each-way on that chicken prediction — course it landed, only idiots would take odds on it after the first round.
