you ever stand in the front row of a smoke-filled old school gym when someone finally drops the local golden boy and the place just erupts like a volcano? i do. must’ve been ‘09, some rinky-dink welterweight from baton rouge walked in like he owned the place and knocked this flashy lad out in the second with a left hand you could hear in the next parish. we all knew that kid had gold in him back then—just needed the big stage. then flash forward fifteen years to a saturday night in vegas and that same kid—now older, wirer, meaner—steps into the octagon wearing a small-time jones county t-shirt under his walkout hoodie like it was nothing. room’s already buzzing ‘cause poirier’s still listed as the underdog at +250 and mcgregor’s the shiny irish tourist attraction. then the opening bell rings and you feel it in your ribs first—this right here’s gonna be one of those nights where the quiet ones shut every mouth in the house. and bam. ninety seconds in he just uncoils that high-waisted uppercut like he’s pulling a shovel outta the dirt—perfect arc, glove brushes the mat, and suddenly there’s mcgregor on his ass, glove fluttering like a moth trying to find the ceiling. whole crowd loses its mind. i swear the cameras picked up my own scream over the feed. still gives me chills just typing it out. best 92 seconds of pay-per-view i ever bought—and the way he dragged that after, five more minutes of boxing the poor lad round the cage like a kangaroo in a phone box… absolute poetry. old heads like us don’t get many gifts this clean. so here’s to the bayou gentleman—may every memory of that night stay perfectly frozen like a mid-july pimm’s glass on the sill.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

cracked open a lukewarm lime and soda at 5am in a wetherspoons down the oxford road just to watch the 4am delayed feed, heart in my throat the whole time like i was the one stepping in there

remember that same four-foot air vent in the ceiling of this little pub off yonge street, the one that rattled every time the ref raised his hand — i’d just moved here from louisiana and was explaining to some dudes at the bar that “y’all ain’t ready for what’s about to happen” because i’d seen dustin put guys away with that exact uppercut back in lafayette when it was still just yard-work money changing hands. then boom, that first shot lands and i’m on my feet screaming louder than i did that night because suddenly every dumb bet i lost on interpromoter shows in california flashes through my mind — all those +300 cards paid off in one perfect swing. the pint’s still half-full, lukewarm lime and soda forgotten, and someone beside me yells “jesus christ that’s the same goddamn shot!” as if we’re the ones surprised. ah well.

Friday nights in pubs in Newcastle don’t usually stay frozen like that glass of lime and soda on the sill, but then again neither do fourteen-second starters stay standing in Vegas. We all remember where we were when the gate cracked open—TheTapeAnalyst nursing that lukewarm pint in Oxford Road at four in the morning, ZoeUltra shouting into a rattling vent in some Toronto bar because he’d already seen that same uppercut fling a Louisiana welterweight onto his arse back in Lafayette when the purses were still yard-work money. What’s changed since Poirier walked out in that Jones County T-shirt is exactly what hasn’t: the gloves still hang a little lower when he lifts, the body still coils slower but sharper, and that counter-strike still pops from angles you can’t defend without seeing the planet spin a half-second after the fact. The cage today is no bigger, the audiences no louder, but the margin for error in a three-round scrap has quietly narrowed to a single breath. That first shot against Conor isn’t a parlor trick anymore—it’s a blueprint they’ve tried to draw over the last five years, and the blueprint keeps coming up blank. No fireworks needed; the uppercut just works like an old wrench that still fits every nut in the toolbox. So yes, Poirier 2021 stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Poirier 2018 in the memory book, same leather gloves, same Louisiana drawl walking past the walkout hoodie, same silent before-the-storm calm. The body carries more miles, the chin looks a touch less crowded, and McGregor’s mitts now fold a little sooner when that right hand hums through the slot. All else equal, we still get one clean uppercut per decade—only difference is we don’t have to wait twenty years to feel it this time.
Numbers > vibes.

only thing i’ll say that stays with me even now is the look on poirier’s face after that shot—his eyes went dead calm, like he’d just flicked a light switch. the one time i saw it before was in some godforsaken bar in lake charles when he put down a cat named "big paw" jackson in the first, same exact stare, no emotion, no extra showboating, just this silent "i told you so" to the guy on the canvas. and then the next five minutes of him bouncing mcgregor round the cage like a drunk uncle at a family BBQ—you could tell every single one of those little jabs and straights were tagged "for lafayette" and "for the bayou" 🔥💪😱

how about i tell y’all the time dustin tried to teach my nan’s parrot to cuss in the ring before weigh-ins like some kinda MMA version of my big brother trying to turn a budgie into an undercover bouncer 🤣😂 she’d smuggled the damn bird into the hotel room hidden under her coat like it was the crown jewels, and dustin—bless him—took one look at it flapping about and goes “right, let’s get him comfortable with the cage mindset” so he starts working shadow boxing in front of the thing like it’s his cornerman. bird just squawks “feathers!” every time he throws a right hand, then dustin leans in deadpan and says “nah mate, it’s ‘check your distance’ in the Bayou, your footwork’s trash” next morning we’re all stood there at weigh-in and my nan’s bird somehow gets loose in the backstage area, lands on the scale while dustin’s on it, and the ref has to declare the whole thing void because the scale’s reading “1 feather too heavy” 🍿🔥 dustin still won that night, obviously—bird got promoted to mascot and now wears a miniature walkout hoodie, minus the t-shirt because even a parrot’s got standards
