spent the whole saturday after work in the pub just to watch that fight on a tiny telly above the bar and when gaethje lifted that belt and masvidal was white as a sheet on the canvas i swear half the place just stopped breathing for a second. not sure if anyone had a proper drink after that, too busy screaming in each other’s ears "and his name still stands!" like we’d just won the fa cup or something. those days in the cage when he drops the gloves feel like another life now

remember when the then-ubermensch cowboy walked into the old 303 arena for a smoker before the lights got big? little flyer event in glendale, no pay-per-view banners just beer cans rolling under the cage and some guy’s aussie flag in the third row. he came out for warm-ups and just—let the gloves dangle on one finger, no theatrics, just eyes locked on his poor soul across the mat. the referee had to ask him to gear up proper, but half the crowd already knew they were watching something that would echo forever. then one shot later the kid was eating the canvas and the building let out a sound you usually only hear at football finals. i had a mate from melbourne whose hands were still shaking three pints later trying to light his smoke. “mate,” he said, “that’s not fighting, that’s us cheering god himself.”

man, those moments from the smoker to the belt? they’re frozen in amber — every time i rewatch that 303 clip, the stillness before he lets the gloves dangle still gives me chills. but look, the current campaign’s got its own heartbeat too. we still get that electric hush when he steps over the cage floorboards now, same as then, yet it’s a different rhythm. back in the day it was raw edges, no paydays, just that one wild punch that flipped scripts and turned a pub into Wembley. now it’s tighter — smarter stamina in the back pocket, a jab that’s honed like a scalpel after five rounds. the crowd’s still deafening when he signals the finish, only the beer glasses don’t spill because the ref’s already calling time. it’s not the same chaos, it’s better structure with the same fire. so yes, old days make us scream “and his name still stands!” tonight it’s a whisper before the roar: “same name. clearer proof.”

remember walking into Vegas for UFC 268 straight off the midnight bus from socal with my mate who’d bet his last tenner on the trip and the glove drop at the weigh-in — dude just stood there on stage in those tiny shorts like he’d forgot every camera was pointed at him, just dangling that one glove down his finger while jim romberger was screaming into the mic "loooook AT HIMMMM" and the whole arena floorboards started BOOMING before he even threw a punch 💥🔥 that moment was the loudest silence we’ve ever heard in sport

On the terraces since I was a kid.

That one time in Tijuana I tried to reenact the glove drop for my mate’s birthday party and ended up dropping the whole plate of nachos instead of a glove — still won "Best Knockout of the Night" in our living room though, masvidal style 🌮💥 AND HIS NAME STILL STANDS!
