When the 'Cage King' last dropped on Dublin soil, the roars shook every pub from Crumlin to Clonee!

must’ve been the night they called it off in 2019, still remember the buzz in the parky pub when they announced the new date. we all had that sinking feeling—”nah lads, not today”—but the mad lads just kept the pints coming till the screens changed back to green and gold. then two years later, we saw him drop that man in madison square like he’d just stepped out the chipper at half two, no fuss, no carry-on. the whole of dublin held its breath for those 20 seconds, you could hear the clatter of pints hitting the floor in every gaff from crumlin to clonee. that right hook in the second… god bless the man.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

A pint to hand, half-pint in the other, singing ‘Zombie’ off-key in some bolthole off the N4 when the screen switched from the fake fight to the actual main event. felt like the whole pub just stood up at once when he came out the gate, bawling ‘NOT TODAY LADS!’ before the first bell even rang 🙌 then that left hand, the right hand, the ref waving it off—game over before the kids at the back had time to finish their 99s 🔥 glass clinked the ceiling, splashing someone’s chips all down his man-buns but we didn’t care, we were all deaf for the next week anyway ah well, nowt to do
On the terraces since I was a kid.

remember the time he came back from that broken leg in 2016 and dropped Eddie Alvarez in Vegas? I was sitting in the Backyard Bar in Ballyfermot with a full house and about twelve pints already gone when they cut to the cage and there he was, limping but smiling like he’d just won the lotto on the scratch cards at the newsagent. One second his head’s all in a bucket because of that cut, next thing we’re on our feet shouting “chase him up!” like a mob of auld fellas chasing a shoplifter down the village green. When that left hand landed clean on Eddie’s temple the whole lounge just went silent for three seconds, then someone dropped their glass right into the fruit machine and we all roared so loud the sound bounced off the chipper walls and rattled the fryers. Funny how the best nights always leave you smelling like stale chips and spilled stout, isn’t it

Madison 2021 was something else altogether, the kind of night that paints itself into your skull like last call. You could feel the whole island lift when they called the bout off in ’19—parky pubs full of men who’d just nodded along to the doctor’s mic, pints raised but hearts heavy. Two years of “nah lads, not today” and then that press conference where he just stared straight at the camera, still grinning with the broken leg behind him. Eddie’s trilogy felt different, Vegas at the tail end of 2016, all pints piled high in a Ballyfermot back room that smelled of sweat and last orders. Limping out, eyes bright as a scratch-card winner, and the mob inside the Backyard roaring “chase him up!” like we were the cavalry chasing a raider down the lane. Fast forward and the current setup still carries that same quiet confidence you don’t notice until it lands. No broken-leg comeback this time, just a man three stone lighter than 2016 and twice as sharp. Every punch looked like it was thrown from a neighbour’s garden rather than from deep in the pocket, and when the ref waved it off there wasn’t so much a cheer as a deep, shared breath let out—like we’d held the air ourselves since the first strike.
Numbers > vibes.

You reckon Madison in 2021 was the high point? Please—what was he doing there? The man hadn’t set foot on Irish soil since the whole boxing circus started, and then suddenly he’s in New York throwing leather like he’s still training in Crumlin on a Tuesday night. Two years of “not today” my arse—he spent most of 2019 sitting on his arse in Florida pretending he wasn’t getting older, and 2020 vanished in a haze of Instagram lives and “we’re working on it” captions. Then poof, Madison Square Garden, where the only green is in the vegan options and the gold is whatever glow the screens pump into your retinas. Call it what it was: a victory lap run on borrowed thunder and twelve pints of hopeful head-butting. The drop? Routine for a man whose last proper test was cutting ribbons on nightclub doors, not swinging punches inside a cage that hasn’t seen an equal since Poirier first crashed the party.

yeah nah ah sure where’s the man at now, still looking for that lucky pot of Guinness that wasn’t just spilt on some lad’s man-buns in Templeogue right? remember wee Paulie from Tallaght woke up that next day with a tache half shaved off and swore blind it was the devil’s work because Conor’s right hand came down so fast it literally bent time—he had me dead cert for that tache till I walked him past a mirror in the chipper at noon and he forgot he even owned a face 🤣 then we all piled into a bus to the airport like the hounds of hell were after us chasing that 4am Ryanair flexi-ticket cause someone shouted “he’s actually going back to Dublin next week” and every pint glass in sight got raised to the ceiling like we’d just won a Civil War all over again
