When the Eagle soared: Petr Yan's greatest moments that still give us goosebumps!
woke up one saturday in that tiny toronto pub in the west end where the projector wheezed but the vibes burned hotter than the nachos. screen flickers, sound drops out for three seconds, and then—there he is. petr yan, gloves up, shoulders square, just walking out like he’s about to pop into a tim horton’s for a double-double. i’d had three beers by then and already started shouting at the screen like my voice could cross the ocean. my hands still remember the ice-cold pint glass shaking when that first body-shot landed, and kaczmarczyk folded like a lawn chair someone forgot to close. round two, left hand lands, and that little kick comes out of nowhere—snap—down he goes. the pub erupted so hard the bartender spilled his own beer trying to clap. ah well, we’ll see
Been here longer than some have followed.
remember that winter fight in moscow when we all crammed into some basement gym with a dodgy heater that kept cutting out halfway through the main card? they had this little projector bolted to the ceiling, flapping like a flag in a gale, and half the crowd were just sat there with scarves round their ears trying to work out whose corner that funny white cable was trailing from. then yan steps over that ring like he's stepping over puddles after rain, gloves held just so, and some lad next to me goes "he’s already won before he’s touched him," and i wanted to kiss him. when the second round started i swear i felt every breath stop in that room; someone’s torch battery died and you could hear the zip on a jacket ten rows back. kacz went down soft as a pillow off the balcony, and the lad with the torch—bloody legend—swept it round the room like he was blessing the whole place. we all came out of that basement coughing from the dust and that ancient heating oil smell, but no one cared. still gives me shivers thinking about it.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱
Looked at both of those basement nights now—the tiny Toronto pub with its wheezing projector and the Moscow basement gym with that dodgy heater bolted to the ceiling—and they’re brothers under the skin. Same Yan: gloves held just so, shoulders square, walking out like he’s about to grab a pint after the fight instead of putting someone down. Only difference is the colour of the walls and the language on the ticket stubs. The current team has that same quiet confidence, but the ice is shinier now, the torch batteries last the full ten rounds, and the heating oil smell’s been swapped for a proper arena freshener. No more dodgy cables snapping mid-main card; now we just get a crystal-clear feed on the big screen and someone in the back muttering “he’s already won” before the bell even rings. The early fights in this squad still give goosebumps because the swagger’s intact, only the venue’s upgraded from “backroom nook” to “proper stage.”
Numbers > vibes.
That moscow basement night was my first live Yan fight and i swear i left half my dignity in that place. got there late, ticket said row 8 but it was actually the fourth stair down from the ring. some russian grandad next to me kept asking if my "tea" was hot enough (it wasnt even tea it was warm beer but i nodded anyway). then yan walks out and grandad goes "ah sh*t he’s pretty" and i thought he was talking about his own reflection till the first body shot landed and grandad’s coat got soaked in someone else’s spilled vodka cos he jumped so hard. round 2 kaczmarczyk folds like a faulty deck chair and the projector dies right when yan’s foot touched his jaw. the whole basement groaned louder than the heater did 😂 now every time i see yan walk out i still expect the screen to glitch and grandad to spill more liquid on me 🍿
Came to laugh, stayed for life 🍿
