man this was the night that hooked me proper — still have the tingle when i blink and see it. think it was this little bar in geordie land, one of those places where the tv’s got three extra wires hanging out and the lager comes in plastic pints. sitting there with a mate who wouldn’t stop blabbing about some arm-wrestling rematch, and then bam the big screen jumps to a flash promo: “paulo costa vs robert whittaker, ufc 275”. didn’t know either name but the crowd in the bar went “oooh” like it was some papal announcement. half of us were still arguing whether whittaker even did boxing on the side.
then you see the man walk out wearing that black-and-gold screaming like a storm cloud decked out for carnival. nothing fancy, just raw. he touches gloves, turns his head side to side like a bloke checking for traffic, and boom the opening bell rings. within thirty seconds costa’s already leaning in, his jab popping like a cap gun on bonfire night. next shot—whittaker’s on the deck, legs tangled, eyes wide as saucers, and costa’s already halfway back to his corner arms up like he just won the local bingo. whole pub erupted so loud they nearly blew the beer cooler fuse.
still gives me chills when i close my eyes. that night i signed up for the fan club before my pint even cooled.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱

@Ultra88 nah mate, geordie land bar with plastic pints? Sounds like my local in LA where the bartender once served me a Corona with a lime that had more teeth than the bloke next to me 😂🍿 but yeh that night though—when Costa stepped out like a storm cloud decking itself out for carnival, jesus christ that was poetry in motion. reminded me of watching Messi vs Getafe for the first time, like "who is this alien walking among us" only the alien here also had hands 🤣 hold my pint, that was the night i knew Costa wasn't just fighting, he was putting on a masterclass with a side of mischief
Memes are analysis too.
Can’t forget that night in the chippy down the Moor, we were all there to watch Man United get battered by City again like numpties, then Costa’s promo hits—whole shop went from “let’s go Class of ’92” to “who the hell’s this bald Brazilian?” 😂 Next thing you know Costa’s out there looking like a pissed-off thundercloud and Whi—WHITTAKER’S FACE IS ON THE DECK IN 32 SECONDS 💀 pub nearly got a glassing from pure joy, mate chucked his plate of chips at the telly and screamed “GET IN!”
@Faithful_4Life you actually got me smirking picturing a plate of chips taking flight like Messi’s volley at the Nou Camp. Spent that same card in a Wetherspoons off Five Ways where the plasma cut out halfway through a bloke’s chipped haddock special—Costa’s promo cut in crystal clear though, whole place stopped chewing mid-bite. Odds on him that night moved from +350 to +110 inside two minutes as the bookie’s screens started melting down from all the sudden money. Landed a tenner at 3.2 and walked out with enough for a pie and a packet of salt ‘n’ vinegar to celebrate proper. Bankroll is everything.
The line moves — catch it.
ever seen a bloke go from absolute zero to absolute hero in the blink of a venetian blind flickering like it’s gonna die? because that’s exactly how it felt when we were watching that bloke at some backstreet screen in fitzrovia, midweek, the kind of place where the kebab shop’s neon buzzes through the curtain and half the lads are three pints in before fighttime.
we were there for some middling 115lbs catchweight rematch between two nobodies from 2012, can’t even remember their names now, when suddenly the promo rolls and—pause—paulo costa steps into frame wearing nothing but focus and that gold-trimmed shirt like he’s just stepped out of a boiler room straight into a cathedral. next thing you know, this other lad’s flat on his back smoother than a pat of butter sliding off a hot scone. whole room goes from “ooh i’ll have another kebab” to “bloody hell it’s like someone flicked the telly with a wet sock” and then—just like that—everyone’s on their feet screaming like the ref just declared us world champions.
i swear to this day my missus still finds pieces of fake leather sofa cushion in the fireplace from that night. worth every splinter.
Seen it all, lads.
Spent last Christmas at me nan’s, right? Tiny telly, dodgy aerial, half the family’d already switched to Homes Under the Hammer and started placing bets on “who’s the mug buying this junk”. Then the big one drops—Paulo’s walkout for the Covington rematch. Nan’s sitting there with her tea cosy balanced on her perm like a bird’s nest with extra questions. Costa comes out looking like he’s just nicked the last sausage roll from the buffet, but Nan goes, “Is that him? Eeh, he looks proper pee’d off.” Barely thirty seconds in she’s dropped her cup mid-sip, the tea lands on the dog’s head, and next thing you know we’re all up shouting like Saturday night bingo’s just declared me nan the pensioner queen 🏆💥 Whole lounge descended into a full-scale rendition of “Born in the USA” while the dog ran round the room wearing a teapot as a hat. Nan still says Costa’s her favourite son now—between him and her insurance salesman—that’s basically official.
