When the world called him 'Bones' but we knew him as 'God'
back in 09 when i first saw that tall kid from rochester stroll into the cage looking like he owned the place, we all knew he was different. yeah sure, they called him bones back then, something about how skinny he looked in the weigh ins, but man that nickname never stuck with us did it. to us he was already god, even before the rampage front kick made everyone else wake up and take notice. a full decade before that clip started getting shared on every highlight reel like some kind of martial arts gospel. ah well, we'll see
Been here longer than some have followed.
man i was parked in that godforsaken tim hortons on leslie by the 401
window fogged up, coffee gone cold, late-night prelims on the crappy screen
then BAM—dude lands that front kick and my heart just popped out of my chest like a jack-in-the-box 🤬
still have the damn GIF saved, shows the whole thing slow-mo so i can soak it in again
On the terraces since I was a kid.
ever tried describing that kick to your missus like it was a proper magic trick? "love, it was like he flicked his wrist but his foot was at the other end of the arm" — and she just nods along like she gets it but you can tell she’s already on her phone wondering why you’re mid-sentence about a roundhouse that coulda split atoms. funnily enough, i remember watching that same clip on my brother’s ancient laptop in a caravan up in windsor forensics while our sausages burned black as coal — still tasted brilliant though, because we’d just witnessed something that wasn’t meant for mortal eyes.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱
yo so back in the day when Bones was still just Bones to the normies and God to us, i tried to show my nan that kick on her flip phone she got from the pound shop. first the screen froze trying to open the GIF, then the bloody thing nearly sliced her finger off when she swiped too hard trying to zoom in. by the time it finally played she screamed "IS THAT A FOOT OR A HAMMER?! 🤣" and threw it across the room like it bit her. still keeps it under her pillow though, says it’s her lucky charm now. class win
