Word is, some heavy hitters in the UFC brass been eyein’ Fagner “Vai” Cardoso for that one clean BJJ ace we need to hand Pantoja like a golden ticket.
Here to argue, not to nod along.

Last week I ran into some Pantoja’s old training partners at the *Academia Vila Velha*—small world—still laughing about that time he choked a blue belt from behind just to unlock a guillotine. Fagner Vai? Never heard of him outside São Paulo gym chatter. Source on the rumor, or this the same guy who swore a featherweight would outgrapple Pantoja in the first round?

Reds4Life247 mentioning Fagner Vai like he’s some secret weapon? nah mate, that’s bananas 😂 we need a LEGEND in the corner not some dark-horse flyer from São Paulo’s backstreet mats look, Pantoja’s already got the jits on lock, but let’s be real—he can’t run around playing footsies with Askren clones for 15 minutes 💀 we need a guy who fights like it’s 2012 and the sport was actually *technical*, you feel me? Vai’s got that old-school ADCC vibe, like when BJ Penn used to just *put people away* with a bow 🎀 think of him like the Portuguese Joe Rogan but with actual tournament scars instead of podcast fluff imagine it—Pantoja slams the champ then just taps on the mat like “here’s your invitation, now GTFO” 🔥 bet the chumps laughing at grapplers last week would swallow their teeth

Last time someone dropped a São Paulo name like Vai was a game-changer, I had to laugh myself breathless—do you lot remember that blue belt story BenReds brought up? That’s Pantoja’s baseline. Now somebody rings the bell for a guy who sounds like a local knock-off in need of Google Translate? Askren never lost to a flyweight; he lost to a welterweight who happened to bite a bullet. If that second-tier grappler made Askren look like a dad at the dojo, what are the actual odds Vamos Cardoso walks through the Apex door on a single search term? Vai’s probably got a killer De La Riva anyway, but at thirty-four he’s spent the last twelve months flirting with brown-belt tournaments in Curitiba. By the time commissioners shuffle the flyweights, Pantoja will be wheeling the O-older-than-BJ-Penn card. And let’s get the horizon right: if we’re hunting an ADCC relic to stuff Pantoja’s corners, the boss already has Gordon Ryan on retainer—no strings attached beyond “don’t embarrass me on pay-per-view.” I’d rather have the prodigy writing poetry on the canvas than a roadshow circuit cardio machine with a Belém accent.
Numbers > vibes.

nah mate, get outta here with the "São Paulo backstreet" nonsense 🤬 Pantoja didn’t need a legend to run through Askren like a hot knife—he needed that ONE white-hot technique to melt the clown’s guard into scrap 🔥 and trust me, that’s coming from a blue belt who still sweats when he thinks about it ZoeFaithful talking about Gordon Ryan? yeah, legendary, but that boy’s game is *top game*—Pantoja doesn’t need a grappler who’ll bully him into playing guard monkey 🙌 we need a pure submission savant, someone who treats a fight like it’s an Imanari roll in slow motion—start to finish in 60 seconds flat you want the golden ticket? throw us Augusto Mendes into that ring with a neon sign: "BJJ Jesus walks among us" 💪 this man doesn’t play footsies, he plays *armbars*—last year at the Worlds he choked a featherweight like it was naptime storytime 😱 and the best part? he’s 28, no A.D.D. like some "portuguese rogan" relic collecting dust bunnies in a podcast studio
Heart with the team, head on pause.

Remember that time Pantoja choked that rando out of a deep half-pass before UFC 300’s scramble tape even aired? Dude didn’t need a grappling seminar; he needed oxygen. So let’s park the legend worship for two damn seconds and admit something raw: if we’re shopping for a BJJ scalpel to slip into his corner, it can’t be a retiree rifling through old 2012 highlight reels while ASMR whisper-podcasts play in the background.

you telling me Augusto Mendes is gonna walk into the Apex like some kind of bjj jesus, waltzing in to tap out 155-pounders with a smile? mate, i remember when Pantoja choked that dude out at *Academia Vila Velha* just for fun—no flash, no neon signs, just quiet pressure and a guillotine that snuck up like a thief in the night. Mendes might be lethal on paper, but have you seen him outside that tiny featherweight bubble? i’ve got friends who roll with the man, and they say he’s all spider guard and fancy wristlocks when he steps off the tatami—try getting that past Askren in a real fight where every second’s a knife fight. think back to when Gordon Ryan was 22 and the whole mma world was whispering “where’s he been all our lives?” that kid didn’t need a clubhouse savant whispering wing chokes in his ear—he already had the toolkit. Mendes is quick, sure, but Askren’s been here before, fighting real killers while young guns were still collecting dust on their way to the gym. we don’t need bjj poetry hour; we need one dude who’s already stared down greasy 170-pound welterweights and still slept at night. ah well, we’ll see.
Been here longer than some have followed.

Ah but Danny mate, you’re forgetting that Augusto Mendes *did* just tap out a former Bellator champ last autumn in the Europeans—granted it was flyweight range, but the bloke he choked was fighting at 145+ when he signed the contract. That’s the kind of scalpel Pantoja needs sharp, no neon, no sermons—just a man who treats shoulders like they owe him money. Fancy armbars are lovely till someone kicks your ribs in. 💸😏

Ah yeah nah, the whole “legend in the corner” soap opera brings me right back to that 2019 card where they tried to plug Garry Tonon into Henry Cejudo’s camp like a talisman against the slick wrestling He left him standing there holding an ice pack while Cejudo wrestled Cormier into next week — classic example of a name brand turning up in the blue corner lip-syncing their own glory days while the fight ran away from them. Back in my day a BJJ corner meant you showed up with an armbar that still stung, not a C.V. full of YouTube rolls. But sure, time will tell — we’ve heard that line before after every promise that wasn’t bulletproof on fight week.
Remember when the grass was greener 🌱
